Sustainable underwear brand, Parade, launched the first-ever seamless carbon-neutral underwear last month. The underwear, “Universal”, is made from certified recycled yarns with an organic cotton lining. According to one of the brand’s many Instagram posts promoting the new eco-friendly undies, they claim to generate 8.5% energy savings, 84% water waste savings, and 77% gas generation savings. Parade is offsetting every pair of Universal produced by “investing in the conservation of May Ranch- over 14,500 acres of native prairie land in Colorado, and a vital home to over 300 bird species” (Parade). This breakthrough of zero carbon emission underwear is a huge step in the brand’s goal of becoming zero-waste. Parade aims to become a full carbon neutral-operating business by the end of 2022.
It keeps getting better-- a pair of the Universal undies is just $8.00! Hopefully, this price increases competition from other underwear brands and urges them to practice sustainable methods of production. Of course, there are completely sustainable underwear brands out there. The most common issue consumers face when shopping sustainably is the price. Many underwear brands that practice sustainable and ethical production sell at a much higher price range than Parade's new Universal undies. Organic Basics, a company making everyday underwear utilizing GOTS Certified cotton and recycled packaging, ranges in price from $39-$127. Cosabella, a luxury lingerie brand based in Italy that uses natural dyes ranges in price from $19.50-$235. With Parade's launch of one of the most affordable sustainable pairs of underwear currently on the market, the environmentally-conscious (and bank account-conscious) consumer is happy.
