Swap Recap: V-Day Edition

Clothing swaps are a Fair Fashion staple, and though they take on many themes, the mission is always the same- sustainability. The clothing swaps are highly anticipated and are always a good time. We gather together and exchange more than just clothing- memories, stories, sentiments, and fashion inspiration are all shared at our swaps.

Our most recent clothing swap was on February 15th; of course, it was themed for Valentine's Day! The love for sustainability and our planet was absolutely in the air. Here are what some of our lovely Fair Fashion members had to say about our most recent swap!

"I love knowing that my clothes are going to friends in the Fair Fashion community! It’s amazing that a piece I don’t get a lot of wear out of can become someone’s new favorite item in their closet."

Said Tara Anastasoff, a 4th-year student in the Emerging Media Master's Double Dawgs program. Pictured to the left in a red polka-dot halter blouse that she got at a swap!

"Firstly, I just love giving other people a chance to wear clothes I don’t wear anymore! Second, I always find some cool clothes I would’ve never bought for myself but end up really liking. It’s just a great way to be more mindful of what I’m wearing and how often!"

Said Luke Bowles a 2nd-year student studying Philosophy and Cognitive Science. Pictured to the right in a white

button-down and green pants that he got at a swap!

Clothing swaps offer multiple benefits that contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. By prolonging the life cycle of garments, promoting second-hand alternatives over fast fashion, and raising awareness about textile waste, they play a crucial role in cultivating a culture of sustainability. These are just a few of the many positive impacts that clothing swaps can have on our environment and society. When asked what sustainability meant to them, here's what our members had to say:

"Sustainability in fashion feels like the future. Big brands like Madewell and Levi’s are figuring out ways to bring secondhand clothing into their business practices, and it feels like such a huge step in the right direction toward a healthier environment." -Tara Anastasoff
"Sustainable fashion just means being mindful of where my clothes came from, taking good care of them, and repurposing or donating them if I’m not using them! It’s a pretty simple way to care for the environment."- Luke Bowles

The Valentine's Day swap was a total success, and if you missed it, don't feel heartbroken - there will be plenty more to come! Our next big event is the annual Fair Fashion pop-up. As we prepare for that and retire our winter wardrobes for the warmer weather, the FF team would like to encourage everyone to keep fashion slow!

Until next time,

FF with love
