Vintage sales
After the closing of Athen’s beloved store, Atomic, vintage clothing vendors have gone online instead of in-store. A couple of local vintage clothing accounts to check out include @warpedvintage, @daughtersoflibertyvintage, @honeyvintagecampaign, @thrift_buster, @priority_vintage, @apple.fritter.vintage, @community_service_label.
Clothing swaps
One fun, easy, and free way to get new clothes and get rid of old clothes is by holding a clothing swap with friends. Essentially, everyone would bring clothes they want to trade, and you go from there. @Ugaswapshop started an initiative to bring students to campus with clothes, household items, cleaning supplies, school supplies, or entertainment items. Fair Fashion is also going to be holding a clothing swap this semester!!
Handmade crafts
Quarantine has done some good, by encouraging people to gain new skills and refine their craft. The boom of creative arts is blowing up on Tik Tok, and in all of our lives. For local artists that make their craft by hand check out @studio.tessafay, @americanajewels, @anniesmasks, @moonart.co, @flimmyflammy, @rigidceramics, @creationsbyrise, @radringsbyrach.
Shop Local initiatives
Local organizations and groups have been encouraging buying local with the Small Business Saturday. This initiative not only stimulates the local economy, but redistributes wealth from large corporations to small, local businesses. Check out our sustainable guide to Black owned local businesses on our blogspot!
Farm to Campus
The Athens Farmers Market and local food systems have partnered with an up and coming student organization, Farmer Market Friends. This new club is set up on the MLC South Lawn, Wednesdays 11am-3pm. The focus of this organization is to connect students and Athens residents with local farmers, offering produce such as greens, carrots, sweet potatoes and more. The weekly farmers market pop-up gives back to fighting food insecurity by donating produce sales to the Food As Real Medicine Prescription (FARM Rx) program. Follow them on instagram for more updates @fmf_uga.
