The Red Carpet Green Dress initiative brings sustainability to the forefront of the global apparel industry by promoting sustainable fashion at red carpet events. Conceived by actress and environmental activist, Suzy Amis Cameron, Red Carpet Green Dress has been in collaboration with the Annual Academy Awards, bringing it more attention every year. Red Carpet Green Dress challenges not only celebrities to support sustainable fashion in a luxurious sphere, but also designers to create sustainably. The challenge to create an “Oscar-worthy” look from entirely sustainable materials has continuously been stimulating the conversation of slow fashion at red carpet events.
The 2019 Academy Awards featured two actors who are also RCGD ambassadors, Laura Harrier and Danielle Macdonald, owning the red carpet in their environmentally-friendly gowns. Macdonald’s gown was a Christian Siriano made of recycled tulle and cotton crepe dyed red with vegetable dye. Siriano remarked, “I want to show people that eco-friendly, ethical, and sustainable fashion can also be beautiful.” Laura Harrier’s light blue hand-embroidered beaded gown (see image) was a custom, by Louis Vuitton. The staff at Vuitton made sure the dress consisted of only natural fabrics, however, they received some backlash for making the gown out of crepe silk. Many animal activists felt negatively towards the collaboration with an ethical and sustainable initiative like RCGD consisting of silkworm fabric.
Red Carpet Green Dress has partnered beyond the red carpet to schools like Fashion Institute of Technology, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, and ESMOD Paris to create internship and work opportunities. Designers from 21 countries around the world have worked with RCGD, and with its growing partnerships and increased conversation, Red Carpet Green Dress continues to bring the topic of sustainability to the fashion industry. Specifically, growing the idea that sustainable fashion is beautiful, no matter the event.
